Smith will never wear the Cardinal and White of the Wisconsin football team, but it could've been avoided. As someone who has had to live through the personal hell of a domestic relationship gone bad, I can tell you that the terms of his plea bargin were probably pretty easy and something he could've taken care of in a relatively short time, at least on the legal end. Most times for a domestic relationship problem like Smith had, the court makes you go to counselling and abstaine from alcohol for a year. Which of these could he not handle? We may never know, but it wasn't a very smart move for a player who is very talented. Of course, we also don't know what sanctions, if any, the school and Coach Bielema put on him. This is just another sad case of an athlete, who wasted all of his talent, because he couldn't follow a couple of simple rules. contact Jerry at jharrison@madisonsportsradio.com
